Sustainability as a Moral Discourse: Its Shifting Meanings, Exclusions, and Anxieties

As sustainability gains popularity in public discourse, scholars have noted its diverse uses, multiple meanings, and contradictory outcomes. This paper explores how the current proliferation of concept stems part from varied normative appeals, which turn motivate, legitimate, unsettle mobilizations. calls for an extension moral horizons beyond immediate here now, this redrawing boundaries has simultaneously produced new externalities as well enduring anxieties responses within these bounds themselves. Drawing on ethnographic historical materials, we argue that sustainability’s become both object scholarly critique their own productive site anxiety negotiation. Questions about often surface concept’s deployment itself. We suggest tensions can be made visible by attending to intersections between a broader range concerns at work.
